Spectrometers and Spectrum Tubes lists five items for spectroscopy in school and college physics labs: three spectrometers at different levels of precision, Geissler spectrum tubes filled with eight different gases, and the power supply that runs the tubes. Figures below are the ones given in each listing.
The three spectrometers compared
| Feature | Spectrometer | Standard Spectrometer | Intermediate Spectrometer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Construction | Sturdy metal, with an adjustable collimator tube, telescope and prism stand | Heavy castings for the main parts, including the collimator and telescope bodies; other metal parts bright plated | Heavy cast metal with bright plated fittings |
| Optics | Not specified in the listing | Collimator lens 150 mm focal length and telescope lens 170 mm, both 21 mm aperture, in spiral focusing mounts | Achromatic objectives of 178 mm focus and 25 mm clear aperture on telescope and collimator, with rack and pinion focusing |
| Circle and reading | Not specified in the listing | 170 mm circle divided 0 to 360° in 1° steps; spring-loaded vernier reading to 0.1° (6 minutes of arc) | 150 mm circle with a protective plastic shield; double-ended vernier reading to 1 minute of arc |
| Eyepiece and slit | Not specified in the listing | Ramsden eyepiece with cross wires; unilaterally adjustable slit 6 mm long | 8x Ramsden eyepiece with a glass cross-line graticule; unilaterally adjustable slit 7 mm long |
| Accessories listed | None listed | Prism clamp for prisms up to 40 mm high, grating holder with 25 x 25 mm aperture, small screwdriver and tommy bar | Prism clamp, grating holder, magnifier and tommy bar |
| Packing | Strong cardboard box | Not specified in the listing | Wooden case |
| Listed for | School use: prism angles by reflection, grating work and wavelengths of monochromatic sources | Useful quantitative work at an economical price | Laboratory and research use |
Choosing between them
The reading is the main difference. The Standard Spectrometer reads to 6 minutes of arc and is listed as capable of much useful quantitative work. The Intermediate Spectrometer reads to 1 minute with a double-ended vernier, so readings can be taken on both sides of the circle, and it adds fine-adjustment screws for telescope and table rotation. The Spectrometer is the entry instrument, listed for school use, with no accessories listed.
Both the standard and intermediate spectrometers come with a prism clamp and a diffraction grating holder, and their prism tables are marked with lines to help place the prism against the levelling screws.
Spectrum tubes and power supply
| Item | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Spectrum Tubes (Geissler) | Evacuated straight glass tubes about 20 cm long, with metal cap electrodes at both ends for a high-voltage supply and a fine capillary about 50 mm long in the middle that concentrates the discharge; one gas per tube: hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, carbon dioxide, helium, argon or mercury |
| Spectrum Tubes, Power Supply | Sheet-metal casing with an indicator on/off switch and captive mains cable; fully shielded connecting sockets; a pair of insulating moulded plastic sockets, one near the top and one spring-loaded at the bottom, hold the tube firmly, keep fingers off the electrodes and let tubes be changed quickly |
Seen through a diffraction grating or a spectrometer, each tube shows the line spectrum of its gas. Hydrogen, for example, shows its visible lines in red, blue-green and violet, while neon glows orange-red with many lines. Order the tubes by gas, and the power supply with them, as the tubes need its high voltage to light.

Questions buyers ask
Which spectrometer reads to one minute of arc?
The Intermediate Spectrometer, with a double-ended vernier on a 150 mm circle. The Standard Spectrometer reads to 0.1°, or 6 minutes of arc.
Which gases are available in the spectrum tubes?
Hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, carbon dioxide, helium, argon and mercury, one gas per tube.
Do the spectrum tubes need a separate supply?
Yes. The tubes run from a high-voltage supply, and the Spectrum Tubes, Power Supply is listed to hold and run them, with insulated sockets at both ends of the tube.
Is a grating holder supplied with the spectrometers?
The standard and intermediate spectrometers each come with a diffraction grating holder and a prism clamp. No accessories are listed for the basic spectrometer.
