Mineral identification works through a sequence of simple tests, and each of these sets isolates one of them, with specimens chosen to show the full range of that property.

Used in order, the sets build a routine for an unknown specimen: look at its lustre, scratch it against the hardness set, rub it on a streak plate for its streak, then examine how it breaks. Streak is the more reliable colour test, because the powder colour stays constant even when the colour of the lump varies.

Nine, from talc (1) to corundum (9): talc, gypsum, calcite, fluorite, apatite, orthoclase, quartz, topaz and corundum. Diamond, at 10, is not included.
Which set should a school start with?
For identification practicals, the Mohs Hardness Set and the Streak Collection, with a rock or mineral set for the specimens to identify, such as the Rock Set or the Mineral Set of 20.
Is there one set covering rocks and minerals together?
Yes. The Rocks & Minerals Set holds 25 rocks and 25 minerals, in a 10 x 14 inch showcase or a 12 x 15 inch wooden box.
