Three galvanometers, three jobs

The three galvanometers are not alternatives to one another. The ballistic galvanometer, with its 10 to 12 second period, is listed for measuring small quantities of charge. The reflecting galvanometer is a spot instrument run from the mains or 6 V DC, with a five-position shunt switch, listed for Kelvin double bridge work. The tangent galvanometer is the one used with a compass: its 2, 50 and 500 turn windings give three coil options, and the compass box sits at the centre of the coil so that the needle is in a uniform field.

The demonstration meter and its scales

The interscale demonstration meter is the base unit, and its scales are supplied separately. Each spare scale carries its own shunt in a sealed moulded box and plugs into the meter, so one meter can be shown as an ammeter, a voltmeter or a galvanometer in turn. When ordering spare scales, list the ranges wanted for each, and order the meter itself as a separate line.

Questions buyers ask

What does “radiations” refer to in this range?
The two cathode-ray tubes. The Cathode Ray, Deflection Effect shows the rays bending near a magnet, which is not supplied, and the Cathode Ray, Shadow Effect shows that they travel in straight lines by casting the shadow of a cross.

Can the dual scale voltmeter and ammeter be used on AC?
No. Both are listed as moving coil instruments for DC measurements only. The demonstration meter is the item in this range listed for showing how both AC and DC meters work.

How is the joule meter read?
The aluminium disc turns once for every 100 J. The counter digits from the left stand for 100, 1000 and 10000 J, up to a total of 99,900 J, and the leftmost reading is subdivided into 10 divisions so that it can be read to about 10 J.

What does the digital multimeter measure?
Volts, ohms and current, plus transistor and diode tests, on a 3½-digit LCD. It has overload protection and comes with its battery, test leads and instructions.
