Polarisation and Prisms lists 17 items for refraction, dispersion and polarisation work in school and college physics labs: solid prisms in glass and Perspex, two hollow glass prisms for liquids, rectangular and semicircular blocks, two seven-piece block sets, two polarimeters and a universal polaroid filter. Sizes and angles below are the ones given in each listing.
Solid prisms
| Prism | Material | Angles | Size, as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Equilateral Prism, Glass | Clear glass | 60°, 60°, 60° | 25 x 25 mm |
| Prism, Perspex, Equilateral 50mm | Perspex | 60°, 60°, 60° | Sides 50 mm |
| Glass Prism, Right-angle | Clear glass; Perspex on request | 90°, 45°, 45° | Hypotenuse 35 mm, length 25 mm |
| Perspex Prism, Right-angle, 70 x 50mm | Clear Perspex | 90°, 45°, 45° | Hypotenuse 70 mm, length 50 mm |
| Prism, Glass, Different Angles | Clear glass | 90°, 60°, 30° | Hypotenuse 58 mm, height 32 mm |
All five are listed as fully polished. The equilateral prisms are the usual choice for dispersion and for finding the angle of minimum deviation. The right-angle prisms show total internal reflection: light meeting the hypotenuse face at 45° is beyond the critical angle of glass or Perspex, about 42°, so it is turned through 90°, or through 180° when it enters by the hypotenuse.
Hollow prisms for liquids
The Prism Hollow, Glass, 38mm and Prism Hollow, Glass, 50mm are equilateral, with 38 mm and 50 mm sides. They are made from glass plates joined with optical cement, with one filling hole, a funnel and a stopper. Filled with water or another liquid, they are listed for studying the refraction and dispersion of the liquid itself, so liquids of different refractive index can be compared in one prism.
Glass and Perspex blocks
| Block | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Rectangular Block Glass | Sheet glass with optically worked surfaces, 115 x 65 x 18 mm |
| Semi Circular Glass Block | Clear glass, all faces polished, about 90 mm in diameter and 18 mm thick |
| Perspex Block Rectangular | Clear Perspex, all faces polished, about 115 x 60 x 20 mm |
| Perspex Semi-Circular Block | Clear Perspex, all faces polished, about 80 mm in diameter and 20 mm thick |
| Acrylic Block, Set of 7 | Seven clear acrylic blocks 20 mm thick in a velvet-lined box: a 75 x 50 mm rectangle, a 90-45-45° triangle with a 75 mm hypotenuse, a 60° triangle with 57 mm sides, a 75 mm semicircle, two bi-convex and one bi-concave shape |
The rectangular blocks are for tracing the lateral shift of a ray and measuring refractive index with pins or a ray box. The semicircular blocks are for the critical angle: a ray aimed at the centre of the flat face enters through the curved face without bending, so only the flat face refracts it. The Glass Block, Set of 7 is listed alongside the acrylic set as a glass counterpart.
Polarimeters and polaroid filter
| Instrument | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Polarimeter | Sodium lamp source (589 nm) with swivel cover, polariser and analyser; metal stand with a slightly tilted shaft for tubes up to 220 mm; 100 mm and 200 mm glass tubes, 15 mm in diameter, and a spare sodium lamp included; two semicircular scales 0 to 180° in 1° divisions, readable to 0.05° with the vernier; 200 x 360 x 450 mm, 10 kg; 115 to 230 V, 50/60 Hz |
| Polarimeter Laurent Half Shade | Fixed polariser with a Laurent half-shade device at one end of a tube and a rotatable analyser at the other; 20 cm glass observation tube; heavy cast metal stand with adjustable height; 0 to 360° scale with a vernier reading to 6 minutes and a fine-motion tangent screw; two polaroids supplied |
| Universal Polaroid Filter (and a second listing) | Polaroid mounted on a 360° circular scale with a pointer, sized to fit any collimator or telescope |
Both polarimeters measure the rotation of the plane of polarised light by an optically active solution, such as sugar in water, and from it the concentration. The sodium polarimeter is the complete instrument, with its own lamp and two tube lengths. The Laurent half-shade model splits the field of view into two halves, and the analyser is set where both halves look equally bright, which is easier to judge than the darkest point. Its listing does not include a light source, so add a sodium lamp to the order.

Questions buyers ask
Which prism shows total internal reflection?
Either right-angle prism: the Glass Prism, Right-angle in glass or the larger Perspex Prism, Right-angle, 70 x 50mm.
Can a prism be filled with liquid?
Yes. The two hollow glass prisms, with 38 mm and 50 mm sides, have a filling hole, funnel and stopper.
How finely does the sodium polarimeter read?
Its scale is divided in 1° steps and reads to 0.05° with the vernier. The Laurent half-shade model reads to 6 minutes of arc.
What is in the acrylic block set?
Seven 20 mm blocks: a rectangle, two triangles, a semicircle, two bi-convex and one bi-concave shape, in a velvet-lined box.
