Motion & Acceleration lists 11 items for kinematics and dynamics practicals in school and college physics labs: a linear air track with its blower, two pairs of dynamics trolleys, AC and DC ticker timers, a Maxwell pendulum, free-fall and projectile apparatus, an inertia balance, and an elastic materials set. Sizes below are the ones given in each listing.
Air track and blower
The Linear Air Track Kit is a square-section aluminium track with two rows of fine holes along the top. Air forced through them forms a cushion on which the vehicles float with almost no friction. The track stands on five adjustable feet, with an air inlet at one end and a butterfly valve at the other to set the pressure.
| Supplied with the air track kit | Use |
|---|---|
| Two heavy vehicles and one light vehicle, masses in the ratio 2:1 within ±2 per cent | Collisions and momentum with known mass ratios |
| Three black cards to fit the vehicles; pegs on the plates for shutter pillars | Timing |
| Four elastic cords with plastic rings, ten spare rubber bands and a reel of nylon thread | Elastic collisions and towing |
| Pin and Plasticine absorber attachments and self-adhesive buffers | Inelastic collisions |
| Two magnets and two counterbalances | Collisions at a distance |
| Two metal location plates | Fixing the track to the bench with clamps, screws or adhesive pads |
The Economy Air Blower supplies the air: a 240 V industrial-type blower used from its outlet, giving a high airflow at up to about 14 kPa, with a wide-bore hose 1.7 m long, a hose adapter and a captive mains lead. It is listed for the air track, an air table and other experiments.
Trolleys and ticker timers
| Item | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Dynamic Trolley Pair | Two identical wooden trolleys on three low-friction wheels; one strong spring plunger; corks in two holes at the front so that long pins make the trolleys stick after a collision; three dowel pegs for stacking trolleys to increase the mass |
| Dynamic Trolley Pair, ABS | Moulded ABS trolleys on three low-friction wheels, strong enough to take an adult’s weight; lockable spring-loaded exploding plunger with two levels of compression, released by a knob on top |
| AC Ticker Timer (Dual Speed) | Vibrating striker that prints dots on tape through a carbon paper disc; 25 or 40 dots per second; runs on 220 V AC, 50 Hz; shock-absorbing plastic case; carbon disc adjusts for standard or wider tape |
| DC Ticker Timer (Dual Speed) | The same dual-speed timer for 6 to 9 V DC |
At 25 dots per second, the dots are 0.04 s apart, and at 40 dots per second 0.025 s apart. Cutting the tape into equal-time strips and laying them side by side gives a velocity-time chart directly, and the change in strip length gives the acceleration. With the trolleys, a class can measure momentum before and after an explosion or a collision, and stack trolleys to double or treble the mass.
Falling, rotation and inertia
- Free Fall in Vacuum: an 81 cm butyrate tube, chosen to reduce static, with rubber caps, one fitted with a hose cock and rubber hose for evacuation, plus weights standing in for the coin and feather, and illustrated instructions. Once the air is pumped out, both fall at the same rate. A vacuum pump is needed and is not included.
- Falling Body Apparatus: a spring-loaded L-section launcher on a solid wooden block holds two 19 mm steel balls. A push button releases it, so one ball drops straight down while the other is projected horizontally, and both reach the floor together. Storage for the balls is built into the block.
- Maxwell Pendulum: winding the suspension onto the shaft raises the rotating mass. When released, its potential energy becomes mostly rotational kinetic energy and partly translational, which allows the moment of inertia of the rotating mass to be found.
- Inertia Balance Kit: two aluminium trays 130 x 50 mm held about 200 mm apart on spring-steel strips, oscillating in a horizontal plane; three equal-mass cylinders about 100 x 25 mm and three support pins. The period depends on the mass loaded, not on its weight, which helps to separate the two ideas.
Elastic materials
The Elastic Rubber Set is a one-quarter class kit for eight students, for compression, torsion, extension and elastic-limit experiments. It holds 25 expendable steel springs, two wide steel springs 114 mm long and 75 mm in diameter, two soft latex foam blocks, a length of valve rubber tubing, four elastic cords with eyelets, four soft erasers for twisting, and 50 g reels of 32 SWG and 26 SWG bare copper wire.

Questions buyers ask
Is a blower included with the air track kit?
The kit is listed with the track, three vehicles and the collision and timing accessories. The Economy Air Blower is a separate listing, so add it to the order.
Which ticker timer runs from mains and which from a low-voltage supply?
The AC Ticker Timer (Dual Speed) runs on 220 V AC, 50 Hz. The DC Ticker Timer (Dual Speed) runs on 6 to 9 V DC. Both print at 25 or 40 dots per second.
What is the difference between the two trolley pairs?
The wooden pair has cork-fitted ends for sticking collisions and dowel pegs for stacking. The ABS pair is moulded, takes an adult’s weight and has a lockable two-level exploding plunger.
Does the free-fall tube come with a vacuum pump?
No. A vacuum pump is needed and is not included. Pumps are listed under Properties of Air.
