Magnetism lists 13 items for magnetism experiments in school and college physics labs: a dip circle and dip needle for the Earth’s field, two ways of making a magnet’s field visible, pivoted magnetic needles with a stand, and sets of metals and materials for testing which ones are magnetic. Sizes below are as given in each listing.
Measuring the Earth’s field: angle of dip
| Instrument | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Dip Circle | Balanced magnetic needle on hardened steel pivots in jewel cup bearings, turning in a vertical plane against a scale of 90-0-90-0-90 degrees; needle and scale in a non-magnetic case with a glass window, rotating on a 0-360 degree base scale; levelling screws and spirit level; needle removable for reversal |
| Dip Needle | Cobalt steel needle 108 mm long against a graduated quadrant, fully rotatable on a plastic base marked every 45 degrees |
The dip circle is the measuring instrument: its base scale sets the needle in the magnetic meridian, and its reversible needle allows readings to be repeated with the needle turned over. The dip needle is the simpler demonstration of the same effect.
Seeing a magnetic field
- Magnetic Field Chamber: an acrylic chamber 163 x 98 x 98 mm of fine iron filings suspended in silicone oil, showing the field in three dimensions, with an internal tunnel for bar magnets or narrow coils.
- Magnetic Field Demonstration Plate: two transparent plates, each a matrix of 14 x 7 small chambers holding a piece of iron rod that acts as a plotting compass. They can be used flat or as faces of a cube, work on an overhead projector, and come with a set of bar magnets.
Needles and stand
| Item | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Magnetic Needle | Carbon steel, jewel bearing |
| Magnetic Needle Brass | Carbon steel, brass cup bearing, 50 mm long |
| Magnetic Needle Stand | Plastic base 72 mm in diameter with a 6 mm aluminium pole and pivot tip; 100 mm overall |
Testing materials
| Set | What the listing specifies |
|---|---|
| Metal Discs | Sixteen discs 25 mm in diameter, two each of mild steel, stainless steel, brass, zinc, nickel, bronze, aluminium and copper; one of each pair stamped with its name, the other plain |
| Material Sheets | Eleven sheets 100 x 32 mm of aluminium, brass, copper, cardboard, lead, gun metal, Perspex, polythene, steel, wood and zinc; metals about 0.9 mm and non-metals about 1.6 mm thick |
| Metal Strip | Twelve strips 50 x 25 mm for magnetism work, each stamped with a key letter |
| Iron Plate and Iron Rod | Soft iron plate 75 x 25 mm; chrome-plated soft iron rod 150 x 10 mm |
| Magnetic Squares | Six flexible magnetic rubber squares 50 x 50 mm in six colours, for building bar charts on magnetic boards |
The metal discs pair a named and an unmarked disc of each metal, so a class can test first and then check its identification. The material sheets add non-metals such as cardboard, Perspex, polythene and wood to the metals.

Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between the dip circle and the dip needle?
The Dip Circle measures the angle of dip, with jewel bearings, a 90-0-90 degree quadrant scale, a 0-360 degree base and levelling. The Dip Needle is a 108 mm cobalt steel needle on a plastic base for demonstration.
Can the field demonstrations be projected?
The Magnetic Field Demonstration Plate is listed as suitable for an overhead projector because its plates are transparent.
Which metals are in the metal disc set?
Mild steel, stainless steel, brass, zinc, nickel, bronze, aluminium and copper, two discs of each.
