Engine Models is a range of 12 demonstration engines for teaching heat engines in school and college physics labs. It has five sectioned piston and rotary engines turned by a crank handle, a gas engine, four steam engines, Hero’s engine and an air-driven turbojet section. Every size, voltage and material below is the one listed on that model’s own page.
The 12 models at a glance
| Model | What the listing shows | Power or drive, as listed |
|---|---|---|
| Diesel Engine, 2 Stroke | Parts in aluminium alloy and gun metal; fuel supply sectioned; a miniature bulb shows ignition; overall height 39 cm | Crank handle, by hand |
| Diesel Engine, 4 Stroke | Same construction as the two-stroke diesel; overall height 43 cm | Crank handle, by hand |
| Petrol Engine, 2 Stroke | Air-cooled; carburettor and fuel supply sectioned; all parts in aluminium alloy; pair of 4 mm socket terminals; overall height 42 cm | Crank handle, by hand |
| Petrol Engine, 4 Stroke | Air-cooled side-valve engine; cam-operated inlet and exhaust valves driven by a gear train from the rear of the main crank; pair of 4 mm socket terminals; overall height 38 cm | Crank handle, by hand |
| Wankel Engine (Demo) | Sectional rotary engine: an arch-shaped triangular rotor traces an epitrochoid, with no reciprocating parts; supplied with a key and printed diagram | Crank handle at the rear |
| Gas Engine 4 Stroke | One cylinder, four-cycle, double valve system; shows intake, compression, explosion, exhaust and retarded spark; wooden base | Battery, with a 3 volt lamp working as the spark plug |
| Steam Engine (Non-Electric) | Working model with oscillating cylinder, safety valve and whistle; 195 x 145 x 170 mm | Spirit lamp with wick, mounted on the base |
| Steam Engine Section | All-metal model with the cylinder cut in section under a glass plate; shows piston, slide valve, link motion and reversing; 375 x 95 x 160 mm | Works by blowing into it |
| Electric Steam Engine with Boiler | Large working model with a horizontal boiler, whistle, safety valve and steam gauge on a metal base | 220 V AC, 50 Hz |
| Steam Engine with Dynamo | Working model whose flywheel and driving gear run a small dynamo to light a lamp; pressure gauge, whistle and safety valve; 410 x 325 x 370 mm | 230 V AC, 50 Hz |
| Heroes Engine | Borosilicate glass bulb about 70 mm in diameter with side arms bent into jets, turning on a metal stand; base 180 x 120 mm | Water boiled in the bulb; burner not supplied |
| Turbine/Turbojet Engine | Cut-section metal model showing air intake, axial flow, double stage compressor, fuel supply, combustion chamber, turbine rotor, jet thrust and exhaust | Air piped through a nozzle |
Sectioned models and working models
The range divides by what a class sees. The two diesel models, the two petrol models and the Wankel are cut away so the moving parts can be followed as the crank is turned, with a miniature bulb marking ignition. The steam engines and Hero’s engine run under their own power, from a spirit lamp, the mains or a burner under the glass bulb. The Steam Engine Section and the turbojet sit in between: both are driven by air, blown or piped in, so their insides can be watched in motion without a heat source.
What to check before ordering
- Mains supply. The two mains-powered steam engines are listed at different voltages: 220 V AC 50 Hz for the Electric Steam Engine with Boiler and 230 V AC 50 Hz for the Steam Engine with Dynamo. State the lab’s supply when both are on one order.
- Heat source. Hero’s engine is supplied complete on its stand but without a burner. The non-electric steam engine comes with its spirit lamp and wick.
- Storage space. The sectioned diesel and petrol models stand 38 to 43 cm high on metal bases. The Steam Engine with Dynamo is the largest item at 410 x 325 x 370 mm.
- Cycles covered. Two-stroke (diesel and petrol), four-stroke (diesel, petrol and gas), rotary (Wankel) and turbine (the turbojet, and Hero’s engine as the earliest form of steam turbine). A set that shows each cycle once needs at least four models.
Related ranges
Engine Models is one of four sub-ranges of Heat & Thermodynamics. Boilers, steam heaters, a flywheel and motor units are listed under Energy Transfer; calorimeters and conductivity apparatus under Heat Capacity and Heat Conduction; and expansion apparatus, bi-metal strips and thermopiles under Thermal Expansion and Thermo Electricity.
Questions buyers ask
Which models turn heat into motion?
Four do: the Steam Engine (Non-Electric), the Electric Steam Engine with Boiler, the Steam Engine with Dynamo and Heroes Engine. The dynamo model also converts that motion into electricity, lighting a lamp through a small dynamo.
How is ignition shown on the sectioned petrol and diesel models?
By a miniature bulb, on all four. The Gas Engine 4 Stroke uses a 3 volt lamp, powered by a battery on its wooden base, as its spark plug.
What does the Wankel model demonstrate?
The rotary piston. Its arch-shaped triangular rotor generates an epitrochoid as the rear crank handle is turned, and the listing notes that the design eliminates reciprocating parts completely.
Does the turbojet model need steam?
No. It is demonstrated with air pressure, and its listing contrasts it with steam engines that have pistons and cylinders: air piped through a nozzle spins a turbine fan, visible through the cut section.

Send the model names and quantities through the contact page. If either mains-powered steam engine is on the list, give the lab’s supply voltage, and say whether burners are wanted for Hero’s engine, so they are priced on the same quotation.
